Video Games for Knitters

I’ll admit, I’m a casual gamer at best, but I have seen several video games across platforms in the past few years that reference knitting or crafting. I haven’t played most of these yet, but I’ll be getting my first console in a few weeks and these are definitely on my list.

Animal Crossing Pocket Camp
Platform: Mobile

This mobile version of the popular console game caught my eye a while ago, but I didn’t actually download it (for free) until Ash told me there was a knitting-themed special event running. Obviously, I had it installed on my phone within five minutes. I not only completed the event in record time, but got duplicates of just about all of the special knit-themed prizes, which included knitted wall paper, a couch, stacks of pillows, a rug, and more to decorate my abode with. Even if you missed out on this event, never fear. There are still special items you can “purchase,” win, or make in the game, and I’m hoping there’s more to come.

Stardew Valley
Platform: Mobile, PC, PS4, Xbox

If you haven’t heard of this super popular farming sim/RPG, where have you been living? The sewer?

Though not directly knitting related, one of the skills you can learn in this game is to “weave” cloth, which can then be sewn into garments. I’m not sure how one weaves using a spinning wheel, but just this once I’ll overlook it. This game is so interesting with so many layers, and it’s entirely relaxing to play. You can even buy the soundtrack if you are so inclined, and I know a lot of people enjoy listening to it when they are trying to sleep or calm down.

The only downside I’ve found to this game is that you can’t transfer your game between platforms, so every time I add a new device I have to start a new farm. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as game play is a little different each time, but it is annoying and I live in fear of losing my 100+ hour saves on my laptop.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn
Platform: Wii

Not gonna lie, I love the Nintendo Wii and I’m sad that it failed as a platform. I really loved playing with it.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn caught my eye for obvious reasons, as our familiar pink hero is transformed into a ball of yarn and must solve various yarn-related puzzles to win the day. I think it looks super cute and though my chance to play it has passed (for the time being, anyway), maybe some lucky soul who still has a functioning Wii will get to play it.

Unravel (1 & 2)
Platform: PS4, Xbox, PC

This game is the perfect mix of cute and creepy for me, and as a bonus the website even includes instructions to make your own version of the main character, Yarny. In this game, you use Spiderman-like swinging skills to scale walls and explore tunnels, where adorable rodents are turned into nightmare creatures.

The sequel was recently released, and I keep wondering if it would be too much to get both of them at once. Alas, the first game is not available for the Nintendo Switch, though the second one is.

Warning: some of the shots from the previews nearly gave me a panic attack at the thought of untangling all that yarn.

Yoshi’s Crafted World
Platform: Switch

While this game has the most limited availability on this list, I still think it’s adorable. I’m a long time Mario fan, and the idea of building my way through the Mushroom Kingdom with tape, cardboard boxes, and bits of string sounds highly appealing.

What? Everyone needs a hobby.

Anyway, it looks super cute and fun.
